FAQs

A commercial ironer, often called ‘finishing equipment’ or a ‘flatwork ironer’, is an ironer designed for commercial use for things like bedsheets, pillow cases, tablecloths and other large items. They come in a variety of types, shapes and sizes, from leading manufacturers such as Miele Professional and Electrolux Professional. A flatwork ironer has a roller, and heat is applied either through the roller or via the “ironing trough”. They can be powered by electricity, gas or steam. Commercial ironers are able to manage large volumes of ironing effectively, efficiently and quickly.
Traditional ironing used at home consists of an iron and an ironing board. Whilst this is fine for domestic use, it is limited in terms of volume and types of ironing that can be done, and it is not effective for the requirements for businesses such as Care Homes, Hospitals, Hotels and Restaurants. Commercial ironers are designed to manage larger volumes of laundry quickly, efficiently and ergonomically, with models capable of managing throughputs of over 200kg per hour and more.

Commercial ironers come in different types, from an ironing table, to a rotary or flatwork ironer, up to a chest ironer. Rotary or flatwork ironers are the most popular, and have a heated roller which presses and dries laundry at the same time. They are much more robust and longer lasting than traditional irons and ironing boards – for example Miele Professional’s PRI Range of ironers is tested for 20,000 hours.
Commercial ironers come in many different sizes:
  • Ironing Table – a professional steam ironing system, that looks more similar to a traditional ironing board and are a similar size. They can have large refillable water containers, or be plumbed in the cold water mains supply. Some models are height adjustable and foldable, and the table and iron are built to last much longer than domestic ironers. Examples include Miele Professional's PIB 100 Ironing System and Electrolux Professional's FIT1 Ironing Table.
  • Small Rotary Ironer – the smaller rotary ironers can be about are usually 0.85-1 metre wide, foldable, and designed to ‘feed’ the items into – the pressing is done by a heated roller, or with a roller and heated trough. They can be operated whilst sat down, and can manage larger items and higher volumes than an ironing table. Examples include Miele Professional’s HM 16-80D and HM 16-83.
  • Flatwork Ironer – this is also a rotary ironer or cylinder type ironer, with a roller, and heat applied to press and dry the items such as bed sheets and table cloths. They can come in different sizes, such as 1 metre wide (e.g. the Miele Professional PRI 210 Flatwork Ironer), or 2.5 metres wide (e.g. Electrolux Professional IC43320 Ironer), to widths of 5 metres or more.
A rotary ironer is an iron which uses a roller to heat and press evenly across the item being ironed. The user will feed the laundry item through the machine and the roller and trough will apply pressure and heat to it. They are often called a flatwork ironer, and are beneficial for businesses with larger volumes of laundry to iron, such as bedding, tablecloths and other items. They can manage larger volumes of ironing compared to a normal iron and board, they are faster, they are easy and more ergonomic to use, and they are more robust. Examples of smaller Rotary Ironers include Miele Professional’s HM 16-80D Rotary Ironer and HM 16-83 Rotary Ironer, and larger Rotary Ironers include Electrolux Professional’s Line 6000 Range and Miele Professional’s PRI Range.
A flatwork ironer is an iron designed to iron flat items such as bed sheets, pillow cases, table cloths and other items. They use a large heated trough or heated roller, which presses and heats the item – they can also therefore be referred to as rotary ironers. They can be manually or automatically fed, and are essential for businesses with an on-premise laundry with larger volumes of ironing. Because they apply heat they can also help dry laundry at the same time, and the higher quality ironers are designed ergonomically for easy use. Examples of flatwork ironers include Electrolux Professional’s Line 6000 Range and Miele Professional’s PRI Range.
There are a number of commercial ironer manufacturers, and who the best one is for you depends on your specific requirements – such as type and volume of ironing/pressing to be done, space and resource available, and power/gas supply to be used. Some of the leading manufacturers of rotary ironers, flatwork ironers and ironing tables include Miele Professional and Electrolux Professional.
You can get a foldable commercial ironer! Professional Ironing tables, which are more similar to a domestic iron and ironing board and operated in the same way, are often foldable. You can also get a foldable rotary ironer, such as the Miele Professional HM 16-80 Rotary Ironer. This market leading ironer is electrically heated with steam function, and gives a uniform pressure over the full working width of the roller (830mm). And because it is foldable, it is a great option where space is constrained.
Where a business has an on-premise laundry, ironing and pressing will usually be a requirement. Whilst outsourcing ironing is an option, this can be costly and ineffective with the volumes required, it relies on external third parties, and slows down the process. And where the laundry to be pressed is in higher volumes and includes items such as bedding and table cloths, a traditional domestic iron and ironing board is not sufficient or cost effective. Businesses, small and large, benefit from commercial ironers, and they include Care Homes and Nursing Homes, Hotels, Restaurants, Schools and Educational Facilities, Hospitals and Event Companies.
Regular servicing is an essential way to keep your commercial ironer in the best shape possible, to help maximise performance and efficiency, and to extend its life. Preventative maintenance is always preferable to reactive repairs – it stops issues before they occur, reduces downtime and save money. At JTM Service we have over 40 years’ experience, and our in-house, specialist and highly trained engineering team can support with all your ongoing service and maintenance needs.
Where you operate an on-premise laundry, ironing is an essential requirement. This can be in a hotel, restaurant, care home, hospital, or any other business needing to press items like bed sheets, pillow cases, table cloths and other large items. Commercial ironing machines have many benefits, including:
  • High volumes and throughput – commercial ironers are designed to manage large volumes of laundry, in all shapes and sizes. Capacities can range from 15kg an hour to well over 200kg an hour!
  • Ergonomics and safety – standing at an ironing board is hard, whereas commercial ironers are designed to help. They include being able to feed through the ironing rather than using an iron, and being able to sit down. They also include safety features such as finger guards, and are easy to use and move.
  • Longer lasting – commercial ironers from quality manufacturers, like Miele Professional and Electrolux Professional, are built to the highest quality, and built to last. They are tested extensively, and can last for over 10 years and 20,000 hours.
  • Space saving – whilst there are very large commercial ironers which may be the right choice for you, there are options more suitable to on-premise laundries where space is an issue. For example, Miele Professional’s HM16-80 rotary ironer is foldable and easy to move, making it an ideal choice for ease of use and where space is limited.
  • Cost saving – with the volume of laundry requiring ironing and pressing in businesses such as care homes, hotels, restaurants, schools and hospitals, being efficient and reducing costs is essential. A commercial ironer can manage large volumes with less resource, and with its long life it is cost effective. It also saves money versus outsourcing to an ironing service.

Ways to Pay

Whether you are replacing existing equipment or adding new equipment, one of the important decisions to make is how you will finance the purchase. There are 3 main options:

  • Buy outright
  • Lease
  • Rent

Each option has different benefits, and which option is best for you will depend on your specific circumstances. At JTM Service we believe being flexible to meet our customer requirements is critical, which is why we are delighted to be able to offer all 3 options. We can also include ongoing breakdown cover and servicing to provide total peace of mind.
