Choosing a commercial dishwasher isn’t just about size or price. One of the biggest decisions is whether a fresh water or tank dishwasher is the best fit for your business.

Both deliver excellent cleaning performance, but they’re designed for different environments and workloads. To help explain the differences, we’ve shared this useful video from Miele Professional, which clearly compares the two systems and when each is the better choice.

Fresh Water Dishwashers

Fresh water dishwashers use clean water for every wash cycle, before draining it away and starting again with fresh water for the next load.

They do not need pre-heating and are ideal for businesses that place a high priority on hygiene and run typically up to around 40 cycles a day, making them a popular choice for care homes, healthcare settings, cafés, offices and many schools.

Tank Dishwashers

Tank dishwashers require pre-heating because they store heated wash water in an internal tank and reuse it for multiple wash cycles, while still using fresh water for the final rinse.

Because the wash water is already heated, they can complete cycles much more quickly in under 2 minutes, allowing higher throughput. This makes them the preferred option for busy restaurants, hotels and other high-volume catering environments.

Which Should You Choose?

There isn’t a single ‘best’ option, only the one that’s right for the way your business operates. Some key questions to consider are:

  • How many wash cycles do you typically run each day?
  • What hygiene standards do you need to achieve?
  • What type of environment will the machine be used in?

If you have a steady flow of washing throughout the day, a fresh water dishwasher may be the ideal solution. If you need to process large volumes quickly during busy service periods, a tank dishwasher is often the better choice.

At JTM Service, we help organisations choose commercial dishwashing equipment that suits their workload, budget and operational needs. If you’re considering replacing your dishwasher or planning a new kitchen, we’d be happy to help you find the right solution.
