The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 (“The Water Regulations”) are designed to prevent the public water supply from contamination. Compliance with these Regulations is required for all businesses. But what are the risks with commercial laundry equipment and dishwashers, and how do you prevent non-compliance?

Risks

When a business uses water from the public mains supply, such as with a washing machine or dishwasher, there is a risk that contaminated water could flow back in the reverse direction and get into the public water supply. This is called ‘Backflow’. The Water Regulations are in place to set out the requirements to prevent this.

Achieving Compliance

To ensure your laundry equipment and dishwasher installations are compliant, you need:

  • equipment which meets the Water Regulations; and
  • the equipment needs to be installed and operating correctly.

To meet the Water Regulations, the appliance will be fitted with an ‘air gap’ and a ‘check valve assembly’, which then need to be installed correctly at the time of installation.
