For Care and Nursing Homes, hygiene and infection control is critical. The laundry is a key part of this, with laundry equipment needing to meet specific legal and compliance requirements, including:

  • Disinfection of laundry – for example with thermal disinfection (defined in HTM 01-04 as hitting at or above 65°C for 10 minutes, or 71° for 3 minutes)
  • Closed drain – contaminated laundry to go into a washing machine with a closed/gravity drain
  • Soluble laundry bags – Soiled and infected linen should be placed in a bag (e.g. ‘red bags’)
  • Water Regulations, Fluid Category 5 – commercial washing machines need to provide backflow protection to the highest standard, fluid category 5.
  • Gravity drain – laundry should go into a washing machine with a gravity drain, not a pump drain.
