By Paul Wood, Managing Director at JTM Service

Every few months we hold a company meeting at JTM Service, bringing everyone together to share updates on how we’re doing, celebrate our achievements and talk about our plans for the future. One of my favourite parts of the meeting actually happens before it even starts.

We ask the team to send in nominations for colleagues who have done something brilliant and deserve recognition. Everyone who is nominated goes into the hat to play our Spin The Wheel game and have the chance to win a prize. As the nominations come in, I absolutely love reading every single one of them.

This time there were 86 nominations. Some are long, some are short. Some are serious, some are funny. But every one of them tells a story. Sometimes it’s about an engineer staying late to make sure a customer isn’t let down. Sometimes it’s someone taking the time to mentor a new colleague or helping a teammate solve a difficult problem. Sometimes it’s simply recognising somebody who is always positive, helpful and willing to go the extra mile.

What I love is that they come from each other. Engineers nominate office staff, office staff nominate engineers, sales colleagues nominate engineers, new starters nominate the people who have helped them settle in. Someone has taken the time to notice what a teammate has done and simply say, “Well done.”

This quarter, 22 of our 25 team members received at least one nomination, and that says a lot about the team here at JTM Service. We notice each other’s efforts, we appreciate them, and we take pride in recognising and celebrating each other’s achievements.

The nominations also allow me to hear about brilliant things that I might never otherwise have known about. Whether it is someone quietly helping a teammate, going above and beyond for a customer or stepping in to support a colleague, these are often the moments that don’t make it into reports or KPIs, but they’re the moments that make me proud.

When we announce the nominations at the Company Meeting and play our Spin the Wheel game, it is great fun. Everyone who has been nominated goes into the draw, three names are picked out and they get the chance to spin our famous wooden wheel, with prizes ranging from extra holiday and shopping vouchers to… well… a toilet roll! It always gets plenty of laughs.

We celebrate awards, great customer feedback and business performance, and rightly so. But when I read through the 86 nominations, it makes me smile because I know how lucky I am to work alongside such a great team. That’s one of my favourite things about every company meeting.
